Writing a book review

How to write a book review: summary

·         A book review analyses the book´s strengths and weaknesses, focusing on the purpose, content and authority of it.

·         Book review (higher level) vs. book report (summary and opinion about the book)

·         Possible outline:
1-    Introduction
2-    Summary
3-    Objective analysis
4-    Conclusion

·         Book review: two main parts:

Summary
1.    It explains, with your own words, what the book is about.
2.    It includes the author’s main point, purpose, intend and supporting details.
3.     It’s the shortest part of the paper.
4.     The text should be summarized as a whole, avoiding the “chapter by chapter” summary.

Analysis
·         It´s a detailed evaluation of the thesis presented by the author
·         For a critical analysis some questions might be taken into consideration:

1.    Does the author assume that the reader has certain background information?
2.    Does he have the necessary expertise to write the book?
3.    Does the book relate to other sources on the same topic?
4.    Does the author use appropriate academic terminology?
5.    Does he present a clear thesis?
6.    Does he contribute anything new to the field?
7.    Can you determine to whom it was written? (the audience)
